I remember flashing a custom ROM called Axiom (since been unsupported) and it came with a slew af awesome ringtones on top of the factory ones. I know I can create my own or use an app such as Zedge, but I am looking for phone-like ringtones like the one from the ROM I mentioned. They all sounded like they would come preloaded on some of these newer phones but at the same time I had never heard them before. Anyone know how/where I can get some like this? Im not looking for songs really, more tone-like sounds.

A good failsafe is always the Crank ringtone. Even though I hear it everywhere now, I still love it =P

Grab a program called Zedge on the Android Market. Ringtones, Notifications Galore.

I'm sure your device will have the MIUI ROM soon (MIUI 4 is nearly there) - easy to apply gads of themes, many of which have ringtones - MIUI intl also has a huge bank of them through the theme manager.
I believe I heard that many people use the app Zedge to get both ringtones and wallpapers, though I've never tried it.
